Infertility is due to several causes. So, the infertility treatment depends on factions such as; “what is causing infertility?”, “how long the couple have been infertile?”, “age of partners”, and personal choice to have a baby. Whatever the cause, most of the infertility causes are curable through ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) and Infertility Treatments. Since, Infertility Treatment involves significant financial, physical, psychological and time commitments, let’s find out what Infertility Treatment Options are for Men, and Infertility Treatment Options for Women?
Treatment for women
Women may need a different type of fertility treatments depending on their health condition. There are one or two therapies for many while others may require different types of treatments to conceive a baby.
- Stimulating Ovulation with Fertility Drugs – For women, who are infertile due to ovulation disorders, fertility medicines are the main treatment. These medications regulate or induce ovulation with several drug options. So, talk to your doctor about fertility drug options with their risks and benefits.
- Hormonal Therapies –Hormonal therapies include giving proper dose of certain hormones which are deficient in the woman. Such hormones are reproductive hormones such as Estrogen & progesterone. Injections of Estrogen, FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone), and Vitamin E Capsules help restore the fertility in women. Some women also produce an increased level of Androgens such as Testosterone and Androstenedione which may interfere with normal follicular development and ovulation. This is diagnosed and treated with hormonal replacement therapies.
- ART – Some successful ARTs (Assisted Reproductive Technologies) include IVF & IUI.
- IVF –In-Vitro Fertilization is fertilizing egg and sperm in a laboratory. IFV babies are often referred to as Test Tube Baby.
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) -During IUI, healthy sperm are placed directly in the uterus at the time when the ovary releases eggs. This helps in fertilization of egg and sperm at the right time. The woman’s ovary releases one or more eggs. Depending on the reasons of infertility, coordinating the right time with medicines for IUI, helps couples succeed in conceiving.
- Surgery to Restore Reproductive Organs –Many times, pregnancy doesn’t occur due to problems in the fallopian tube or uterus cavity. Surgery helps to restore reproductive organs in problems such as endometrial polyps, cyst, uterine septum or intrauterine scar tissue. Surgery is mostly done through hysteroscopy.
Infertility Treatment for Men
Men’s options can include treatment for general sexual problems as well as complex issues in the penis or testicles. Such treatments include:
- Improving Lifestyle –Sperm reserve is reduced due to substance abuse, stress, emotional stress, a lack in a relationship, and others. Improving lifestyle and behavioral factors such as smoking, can improve the frequency of intercourse and better sexual relationship. Such treatments often include discontinuing select medications, eliminating harmful substances, improving frequency and timing of intercourse, regular exercise regime, diet chart improvements, and optimizing other factors that may impair fertility.
- Hormonal Therapies –Hormonal therapies in men include giving testosterone doses to help restore reproductive hormones in men. Hypogonadotropic Hypogonadism occurs as a result of disorders with the pituitary gland or hypothalamus. It is diagnosed through MRI and Hormonal Tests. These testes stimulating hormones are replaced with LH (Luteinizing Hormones) to increase sperm count.
- Medications –In some cases, medications may improve a man’s sperm count. This helps more sperm reach into the vagina of a woman and then to ovaries that help in achieving a successful pregnancy. These medicines are primarily aimed at increasing testicular function, including sperm production and quality.
- Surgery to Restore Reproductive Organs – In select conditions, surgery may be able to reverse a sperm blockage in testicles. This restores fertility in men. In some other cases, repairing a varicocele through surgery may improve overall chances for pregnancy.
- Sperm Retrieval –When a man is not able to ejaculate or suffers from erectile dysfunction, sperm retrieval is an option to consider. In this technique, sperm in the ejaculated fluid is obtained and used in ART (assisted reproductive technologies) such as IVF and IUI.
